These aren't my people

The more time I spend here, the more I realize how different my views on usability, design, and data visualization are from the rest of the people here. I feel like my ideal goal in my work as a developer is to make people's lives easier, but people here are complicit with Adobe in holding profit above all else. I'm not enjoying this conference very much, but it has been a learning experience -- I'm learning just how far we have to go before software really begins to reach its true potential.

That's what brings a lot of people to the idea of a career change for either of less pay or less prestige but where they think they are making a difference to more than just the bottom line. There was a fancy buzzword for that, but I never have been good at buzzwords.

I've been thinking about this sort of stuff for years, and I've always known the majority of developers aren't in the same place that I am regarding this stuff, but I've never actually spent time in a situation like this conference. I'd love to be able to make a career change in such I way that I felt like I was working more towards my own goals, not just my employer's, but my life isn't in a place where that's a viable option at this point.

I was in a pretty bitter place earlier today, and all the self-congratulatory wanking that was going on was really getting to me. I went to a couple panels on accessibility that made me feel better.

It sounds like you'll look back on this conference as a real learning experience. Perhaps it will propel you forward with more focus, since you've seen so much of what you don't want to do in one concentrated blast.

I think you've got a good future if you stick to your principles. If I could buy a few hundred shares of Ryan Freebern I'd consider it a sound investment.

Gosh, thanks Rob. You've said something like this before and it's always very nice to hear.
