In short: a collection of interesting, well-written and thought-provoking stories from a guy who knows what he's doing. You can read my full review here.

Writing book reviews for UR is an interesting challenge -- in order to fit the topic of the blog, I chose to focus my review on the technology that Marusek uses in the stories, and I tried to examine how that technology is an extrapolation of something that already exists. It was fun writing the review, and even more fun reading the book!

heh, I just finished it today and am starting work on my review. I've been reading Marusek's stories for about a decade -- I *loved* "We Were Out Of Our Minds With Joy" when I came upon it in that year's Dozois Best Of -- but until I read all the stories as a batch, I hadn't realised just how damn dark his worldview is. Seriously ... he thinks "My Morning Glory" is upbeat? Good lord.

(Which is not to say he isn't a kickass author doing some of the most mindbending hard SF around. Just that I hope his day-to-day life is cheerier than his fiction.)

When I started reading, I hadn't known that I knew Marusek, but it turns out I read the title story in Asimov's in 1998 somehow, despite the fact that I wasn't a subscriber. It's possible I picked up a random issue at the public library or something, but yesterday as I was reading it, it suddenly struck me as very, very familiar. That was an interesting experience.

I'm looking forward to reading your review!
