Home again

I have been having trouble getting back into the swing of things since our little sojourn to visit families for Thanksgiving. I went to work yesterday, but immediately developed a terrible headache and came home early, and then took today off sick. I've spent the day recovering and cleaning the apartment and reading, and I feel better now.

When we arrived at home Sunday night, most of the apartment complex was completely dark. The lamps on lampposts all around the grounds weren't lit, and the porch lights outside each apartment's door were also out. But several apartments had indoor lights on, so I knew the power wasn't out.

We made our way blindly up the pitch-dark staircase to our apartment and found a flashlight. While we were unloading the car, all the outdoor lights flickered to life. We realised that they're on a timer that apparently doesn't take December's early nightfall into account. Now every day we have to endure an hour or so of complete darkness outside before the lights kick in.

Sarah saw an unfamiliar creature in a tree near our building and dragged me outside to see it. It was a tiny, grey-furred rodent with wide black eyes and a flat tail as long as its body. I immediately thought it looked like a flying squirrel because of the tail, but -- here? In Rhode Island? And so tiny?

Turns out that Northern Flying Squirrels are native to this area, even though we've never seen them before. There are actually three of them living in that tree. They're quite bold, too. We were standing watching the first one, and it began making high-pitched squeaks. Within seconds another appeared above it, and a moment later the third came flying over our heads from somewhere behind and above us and landed on the tree trunk. How cool.

In other news, December is going to be the most hectic month ever. Sarah and I have exactly one weekend day to ourselves between now and Christmas, and most of our shopping isn't done, of course. This Saturday we're going to NYC for the day, to do some shopping and get to see the Rockefeller Center tree, and try to find the Central Park Zoo.

Enter at the southeast corner of the park (near General Sherman) and the zoo is very easy to find.

*sigh* You are doing exactly what I have always wanted to do. I feel that I NEED to visit NYC around Christmas time so I can see the Rockerfeller tree and go ice skating...you can still do that right?..and do all that other magical christmas type stuff that can only be done in NYC.

*kicks ground*

And now back to being 23 years old. *ahem*

You probably didn't notice that when you are selecting which friends to use, it says "If you don't have twelve friends, some random ones will be added for you." Well, I'm one of the random friends who got added!
