URI Move-In

It's move-in weekend at URI, and the place is a madhouse. I brough Sarah up to work at the Union at 9, and then ran some errands. There were already policemen and helpful-people-in-birhgt-shirts out in force, and we got stopped once and asked if we needed directions. By the time I got done with the errands an hour later, the traffic was already pretty heavy.

I'm going to take a walk through campus around lunchtime just to watch some of the craziness going on as thousands upon thousands of students attempt to arrive at the same time. Whee!

Our apartments have a policy that nobody is allowed to store anything in the stairwells or on the landings, for fire-safety reasons. This would be more reasonable if the stairwells and landings weren't very large with ample space to store a few things, like bicycles, while still leaving plenty of room for fleeing people. Almost everyone here has a bicycle, and most of the families with kids have a bunch of outdoor-toys, and we have nowhere to keep them except inside our apartments, which is just cluttery and messy.

So a week ago, the housing people went around and taped notices to everything in the stairwells, saying "move this by the 29th or we'll discard it." So on the morning of the 29th, I wheeled our bikes into our living room.

Now it's the 30th and everybody else's stuff is still in the stairwells, with the notices still taped all over it, and my living room and entryway are crowded. I'm a little annoyed. Maybe I can convince the housing people to put up a locked community bicycle storage shed.

yuck, moving is always very stressful, be it at work or at home. everyone at work is stressed because they are having a major move around, so it's a little bit annoying putting up with the smell of dust polish (which makes me sneeze) and putting up with people moving 'their' drawers around the room. i hope they leave a space for me...

anyway, my point is - hope your move in went well and that you have a safe place to put your bike :) also hope that all that clutter gets moved :)

Oh oh no, we're not moving in. All the kids who go to school here (URI is the University of Rhode Island) are moving back in, since the new semester is starting. We live here year-round so we don't need to move anywhere. :)

I guess I didn't really explain that well. :)
