LJSitcom Code Release

Okay, so I'm releasing the source code to the ljsitcom script to the public domain. I've decided to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which means anyone can copy, display, distribute, and modify it to their heart's content as long as they give me attribution somewhere. Like "this is based on code by Ryan Freebern" with a link to corknut.org.

You can find the LJSitcom source code here. It's fully commented, some system-specific bits have been generalised, and it ought to read easily for anyone familiar with Perl. If you don't know Perl, it might be a bit tricky to understand... but probably not.

I have one worry -- namely, that I will release this and within a week or two I'll see scores of "What's Your LiveJournal Soap Opera?" and "What's Your LiveJournal Talk Show?" ripoffs. Please, for the love of all that's decent, don't just replace the word lists and pretend it's something new. Use the screen scraper bit, make it better, add functionality, make it calculate word frequencies or something, make it different. Turn it into something of your own, don't just spit back what I've already done with different words. I'm trusting you with this. Show me that you're creative.

Go crazy. And as always, drop me a line if you have any questions. As long as they're not "can you make it do this for me plz kthx?" or "lol how do i rite perl code?" I look forward to seeing what zany new memes people come up with.

Oy, I sure hope not. With luck, people will only use this for good, not evil. :)

I forced myself to learn basic Perl after seeing that meme. Whether that's a good thing or not is a matter of opinion, I suppose. I wrote a random generator that I'm pretty pleased with, never had thousands of unique visitors see anything I've written before.
At the moment I'm writing the (original) structure to a 'movie synopsis' one, though I'll just have a form to ask people which friends they want to use, and what gender/age-group they are. With your permission, which I suppose is really what this entry to which I'm replying to gives, I might use your method of gathering information from LiveJournal/URLs in a future project. Thanks in advance. :)
