Driving in Rhode Island

I don't think anyone in southern New England knows how to drive. Except me, of course.

Two days ago, I was driving along at about 28 in a 25 mph zone. This pisses off everyone behind me, because I have the gall to go somewhat near the speed limit. I got to my turn, and started slowing down and put the left turn signal on. The punk behind me chose that moment to roar past me on the left, in a no-passing zone, cutting off my turn and completely freaking me out.

At least I had the presence of mind to lean on my horn.

This morning on my hour-long drive to work, I witnessed a few more fun incidents. First, while driving in the middle lane, the guy in front of me in the right lane puts on his right turn signal and then merges left, directly in front of me. Later, a speed-demon tries to pass people in the fast lane by pulling into the slow lane, then gets annoyed because (no way) the people in the slow lane are going slowly, and passes them by driving on the shoulder. I gave him lots of room after that.

I've been wanting to become self-employed and work from home for a long time. The more I drive, the more my desire to not have to spend 2+ hours each day on the road increases. Sigh.

I don't think people know how to drive, period (except you of course). They certainly don't know how to drive here in Canberra that's for sure.

I don't contribute to the idiotic driving as I don't drive. Heh.

Oh my goodness, people everywhere are nutty drivers. Something like that passing-on-the-left-in-a-no-passing-zone happened to me too. Also, one time as I was cruising at moderate speed on a street downtown, approaching an intersection with a signal that was green for me, a car on the cross street made a right turn, right in front of me, against the red light, without stopping, JUST AS I ENTERED THE INTERSECTION. I was utterly boggled. I do my best to be as non-scary a driver as I can.

Wait...I know how to drive :P

But I know exactly what you mean, I live in Warwick and I think that the worst of all the drivers live here. The other day I saw not one, but two people try to turn left onto a one way street (of course going the wrong way), after realizing the mistake....one of them swerved to get back in the correct lane, narrowly missing my car.

I know that when I start commuting to school again I'll want to become home-schooled and whatnot to avoid the crazy drivers out there.... *sigh*

Warwick is dreadful to drive in even at the best of times. It seems like there's no alternate routes through town except for Bald Hill Rd., which is always jam-packed with traffic. I'm glad I don't have to drive there too often.

We were actually up that way last night (Starbucks craving!) and got caught in the huge thunderstorm at about 8:00. That was rough!
