Summer in the city

It is funny thinking of Burlington as a city. We have 39,000 inhabitants, and just over 200,000 in the entire metro area. Nevertheless, it's the most city-like of all the places I've lived barring Syracuse, which doesn't count since I was in college and broke and sans transportation. Lately I've been riding my bicycle all the time: to and from work, downtown and back home when I feel like getting out, up and down the bike path along the shore of Lake Champlain. I love it! Being able to forgo the car in favor of my bike is one of the things that I've always thought would be wonderful about living somewhere like this, and it turns out it is.

The summer has been unusually rainy. Most summers, there are occasional storms but it seems like for a long time we couldn't go a single day without rain. The past couple weeks, though, have had much longer periods of sun. When I'm not at work, I've been trying to get outside more and enjoy it. Fall is coming on, and the mornings and evenings are getting pretty cool, but during the day it still feels like summer.

This weekend is a long one, and we have no plans -- I think that's only happened one other weekend this summer (and that one ended up full of visitors anyway) so I'm looking forward to it. While our apartment is in pretty good shape, there are still a lot of loose ends that need to be tied up and maybe I'll have the time to get to some of that, which will make me feel good.

the_jenya will be in VT for grad school by this time next week, which is exciting. I've been looking forward to her arrival for many months! She is a talented and ambitious comic artist and she's been accomplishing great things with her art lately, and I'm glad that I'll get to see her on a regular basis.

I've done that thing again where for a few months at the beginning of the year I go gung-ho on posting to my LJ and then things taper off to barely anything. I've gotta quit that. And maybe try to write for ryan.freebern.org more too. I have a lot of thoughts that I never bother to write down that I probably ought to, if only for my own reasons.
