Readercon report

I went to Readercon this past weekend. I have discovered that I have an emotional pattern when I go to cons: I have a great first day, and then for a good portion of the second day I am lonely and blue and entirely unmotivated to do anything, and then eventually I recover and have a good time the rest of the trip. Maybe now that I've identified this I can plan around it.

I only went to one panel this weekend. I've found that panels aren't often much more interesting (to me at least) than, say, reading blogs or looking stuff up on wikipedia. If I want to passively absorb information, I can do that on my own time. Instead, I attended a bunch of readings and kaffeeklatsches and enjoyed the more personal aspects of the con, which felt more like what I want from an event like this.

Some highlights of the weekend:
  • Getting hugs from shadesong and Sarah Beth Durst
  • Being introduced to and having fun conversations with sarahtales and trifles
  • oracne reading a chapter of her (excellent) upcoming novel to me and jenwrites
  • Spending an hour or so talking with shadesong and ckd about various and sundry topics
  • Running into mabfan and gnomi
  • Seeing golaski's 1-year-old daughter Elizabeth, born a year ago during Readercon
  • Getting the chance to attend a MaltCon on Saturday night, where I got to taste a selection of single-malt whiskeys and converse with a handful of funny, friendly people
