Evicting our latest uninvited tenant

Lately we've been finding evidence of a critter in the basement. We don't store food down there that critters can get into, so it's just been messed-up papers and stuff for the most part. I put our medium-sized humane trap down there and didn't catch anything, but it kept getting tripped without the bait being taken, so I figured it might be something bigger. Then one day Sarah opened the basement door and saw a squirrel sitting there on the stairs. Eek!

I put the big trap down there and tied a half a pear to the trigger, so that in case the squirrel wasn't heavy enough to spring the trap, maybe if it moved the pear that'd do the trick. And this morning, it worked! So we had a squirrel in a cage for the day.

This evening (when Sarah got home with the car) I drove the squirrel a few miles away and let him out. I hope he can make a new life there!

Huzzah!

Reminds me of a timid little mouse that somehow made the trip from central Washington to our house in Seattle in the engine compartment somehow. He got dropped at the ball field at the local high school (the most wooded place we have in these here parts).
