Superbowl XLII

The outlook was fantastic for the Patriots last night:
The score was fourteen - ten and they had put up quite a fight.
And then when Manning's short left pass was caught by Plaxico,
The Giants took the lead with merely seconds left to go.

There was ease in Brady's manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Brady's bearing and a smile on Brady's face.
And though the clock was running out and lesser men would yield,
He was determined yet to win; 'twas Brady on the field.

Two hundred million viewers' eyes were glued to their TVs;
A hundred million breaths were held and drinks were set on knees.
Then when the ball was snapped and passed and incomplete, deep right,
New England's fans began to fear that heartbreak was in sight.

And now the Giants' quick defense put Brady on the ground,
And from the stadium there rose a loud, tremendous sound.
Third down and twenty, said the ref, but Brady wasn't stopped:
He'd been in tighter spots than this and still come out on top.

His next pass flew on down the field but slipped through Moss's hands,
New England had but one chance left; a silence filled the stands.
Then Brady's face grew stern and cold; they saw his muscles strain,
And they knew that mighty Brady wouldn't miss his chance again.

The sneer is gone from Brady's lip, determined yet to win.
He barks his plans to pull it off to his assembled men.
And now the snapper hikes the ball, and Brady lets it soar,
And now the stands erupt with screams; Moss reaches out once more.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are celebrating, somewhere children laugh,
But there is no joy in Boston - mighty Brady missed the pass.
