Half-Blood Prince

I finished reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Wednesday night. Here are my thoughts.
  • Harry and Ginny are the perfect couple. And I think Ginny is going to factor heavily into the endgame. Dumbledore spent quite a while reminding Harry how love is his most powerful magic, but since all of Harry's relatives who really loved him are dead, he needs someone else, which will probably be Ginny.
  • Ginny is also the Weasleys' seventh kid, and seven is a very magical number. We don't yet know much about Arthur Weasley's extended family, but it could turn out he's a seventh kid as well. Equal opportunity magical legacy! (Molly only has two siblings.)
  • Snape is totally a double agent working for the Order, secretly, through arrangement with Dumbledore. When they're on the tower, and Dumbledore pleads with him, it's not because he wants Snape to save his life, it's because he wants him to do what they've arranged: kill Dumbledore so that Snape's place with the Death Eaters isn't threatened and he can more easily work to undermine Voldemort from within. Plus, Dumbledore is a smart guy, and knows the truth with eventually come out, and show that he was a martyr for the cause and not just a guy who foolishly trusted the wrong person.
  • One part of me expects Dumbledore to pull a Gandalf the White in the next book, but the other part realizes that Rowling most likely wouldn't dare invite comparisons to Tolkien.
  • R.A.B. is probably Regulus Black, Sirius's brother, which probably means a horcrux is hidden amongst the Black family heirlooms, which in turn makes me expect Mundungus Fletcher stole it.
  • Hermione really kind of got the short shrift in this book, didn't she? Hardly any storyline.
  • Man, no end-of-year feast or tallying of house points!
Please leave a link if you wrote something up about this book when you read it. At the time, I was avoiding everyone's thoughts so it wouldn't be spoiled for me, but I would like to read them now.

THANK YOU!
So many people seem to believe the Snape is ultra-evil after what happened.

Re: THANK YOU!
If you base your assumptions on "Dumbledore is not stupid," it's easy to come to the conclusion that Snape is not evil. It sucks that he had to kill Dumbledore, but it was either that or totally blow his cover and ruin the Order's best chance. I expect that he, too, will die before the series is over, but not before causing great damage to Voldemort and being recognized as a hero.

Re: THANK YOU!
I have not read the book yet myself, but another spoiler-laden review made the claim that Dumbledore was doomed anyway by a potion he drank; and as well as preserving Snape's cover, he wanted Snape to kill him to end the agony he was in from the potion's effects, and to prevent Draco - who isn't irredeemable yet - from being the one to kill Dumbledore instead and becoming a murderer.

I'm inclined to agree that "Dumbledore is not stupid" is a good assumption to make; and I don't think he's likely to do a Gandalf because I think it's Rowling's style to force us to confront things like death head-on.

Re: THANK YOU!
R.A.B., whenever he retrieved the horcrux from the cave, had to have drunk the same potion that Dumbledore did. However, Regulus was supposedly killed by Death Eaters (or maybe Voldemort) shortly after leaving their ranks; perhaps he was actually killed by the potion's effects instead? And if so, perhaps Snape recognized those effects and knew that killing Dumbledore quickly was merciful as well as expedient.

Re: THANK YOU!
I'm also of the "Snape is not evil" camp! I just don't think that, after spending 5 books trying to establish Snape as a good guy, JKR would just turn around in the 6th and suddenly turn Snape into THE ultra-evil villain...

Somehow that strikes me as a rather abusive relationship!

naw, they just have to get over their unrelieved sexual tension. *g*

(tbh, I don't like harry/ginny because I think it was, overall, poorly developed. I mean, it's not like no one could see it coming like a freight train, but that was due to things outside the books themselves. Within the storylines it seems a bit... I dunno. The relationship development is just badly done. Also, the whole monster in his chest thing just makes me snicker and think of Aliens. *g*)

i had fun reading this site: http://dumbledoreisnotdead.com/

it's got lots of theories and "clues" as to how dumbledore really isn't dead and will be coming back. i'm not sure if i believe it or not, but there's lots of stuff there

Ooh. Maybe JKR is pulling a Gandalf after all! That's a neat site. :)

Hmmm, good catch on Mundungus. I didn't pay enough attention to that.

I actually only realized that while I was writing up this post. The scene with Mundungus occurred, and Harry was righteously angry, and then nothing ever came of it.
