Snowboarding take 2: Smuggler's Notch

Smuggler's Notch has a great name that makes you think of mountain-pirates—okay, makes me think of mountain-pirates, at least—and it is also a fun ski area. It's not far from my brother's house, so we drove up there Thursday night and then the three of us (me, my brother, and his wife) hit the slopes Friday morning.

My little brother pmfbiker has been repeatedly telling me "bend your front knee!" so I concentrated on that, and, lo and behold, found I could do toe turns this time. Last time I could only manage heel turns, so my mobility was somewhat limited, and my falls were frequent. This time I could go back and forth across the trails in large, semi-controlled curves, which was much more fun. My turns are still very wide, and I get going much faster than I am really comfortable with while making the turns, but I am certainly doing better than I was back in December.

The snow on Smugg's trails was very hard-packed with no powder, so while I fell less often, each fall hurt quite a bit. By the end of the day, my arms and shoulders were pretty sore (from catching myself) and I had banged up both knees pretty hard. But I felt like I had made a lot of progress! By the evening, my left knee was all blotchy and purple with bruises, so I iced it for a while. Now it's mostly okay and hasn't hurt since then.

We have one more scheduled snowboarding trip— to Mt. Ascutney, right near our house this time—before the winter's out, so maybe the third time will be the charm for me, and everything will come together. Even if it doesn't, I'm having a lot of fun learning and practicing! 2008 is less than a month old and already I feel like I have picked up a new skill.

RE: snowboarding
it's true, it's all in the forward knee.
Thanks, big brother, for the mention. Now my site hits will shoot through the roof. :)
So when is this Ascutney trip planned for?

Re: snowboarding
We're going on Sunday, Feb. 10th. Lift tickets are $60, though, which is pretty steep.

Re: snowboarding
Wow, that's a little harsh. Maybe I'll split it in half with Mom. Or maybe I'll wait for you all to get down here to Willard.
